The Consorcios del Vino based on an INNOVA CORFO project, are implementing the first network of meteorological stations for the wine industry, which will cover all the wine production areas, from the IV to the VIII region.
This project finances 33 meteorological stations that will be installed in our vineyards according to technical analysis provided by the professionals in the Universidad de Talca. This network will offer, to all vineyards, online and real-time meteorological information: one type of information that will be of free access and other specific information that will be paid for once the project is finalized, with the general objective of improving the competitiveness of the winemakers associated to Wines of Chile through the implementation of bioclimatic indexes and processed climate information for the characterization of Chilean terroirs and to support decision making in vineyard operations.
The methodology that is going to be used considers the creation of a information processing system that will allow large volumes of information generated by the meteorological network to be processed. These indexes will be compared between the different influence zones of each meteorological station in order to establish similarities and differences found in each zone.
The information gathered would then be contrasted with information available world wide regarding the climatic requirements of different vine cultivars, orienting winemakers in the adaptation of vine cultivars in the production areas they are in and in the choice of cultivars with better adaptation in new plantations.
This project considers the use of meteorological station software that concentrates and manages an important number of stations, gathering this information online in order to be used by potential users associated with Wines of Chile. Finally, with the development of a communication program it is expected to train the users, giving the necessary tools for the use of all the potential climatic information in a mid and long term set of time. This project considers the online information system to be sustainable in time by means of charging for products or services that can be obtained through the network information and/or by giving access to suppliers in the industry in order to maintain the service they provide.
All the of the above will improve the competitiveness of the Chilean wine industry by generating an image of a high quality wine producer, that offers wines that express the uniqueness of the different agro climatic regions of our country. This will guide users with the use of these tools to know the behavior of the different cultivars in the different wine growing regions they are in.
